The My Bonaire Tree program:

ENCOURAGES LOCAL CONSERVATION PARTICIPATION

...by increasing the sense of ownership and wellbeing among the island community, while demonstrating the wonder and value of Bonaire’s terrestrial environment.

REDUCES EROSION

...by reforesting overgrazed hillsides, enabling roots to bind the soil and prevent it from washing downstream into the coral reefs found in Bonaire’s coastal waters.

BENEFITS THE ENDANGERED SPECIES LOCATED ON THE ISLAND

...including the Yellow-shouldered Amazon Parrot, through the restoration of native habitat and food sources, returning their wild population from the brink of extinction.

INCREASES SYNERGY BETWEEN NATURE, AGRICULTURE AND TOURISM

...by expanding the diversity of native trees providing more nesting and feeding options for local flora and fauna, while also giving participants the opportunity to support tree planting along roadsides, in gardens, and on kunukus (ranches/farms).

PROMOTES HABITAT RESTORATION AND IMPROVES LOCAL AGRICULTURE

...with increased water retention and nutrient cycling through shade and root systems, while leaves and deadwood restore ecosystem functions by rehabilitating damaged soils.
